How to Brew Barista-Level Coffee at Home (No Fancy Machine Needed)

You don't need a £2,000 espresso machine to make barista-level coffee at home. What you need are; good beans, the right grind, and about five minutes. Here's how to get the best out of both Lekker Brew and Bliksem Brew, whatever kit you've already got in the cupboard.

The two things that matter more than your machine

Before we get into methods, two fundamentals decide whether your cup tastes lekker or like dishwater:

  • Grind size: coarse for French press, medium for pour-over and drip, fine for espresso and moka pot. Wrong grind is the number one reason home coffee tastes off.
  • Ratio and water temp: start with roughly 1g of coffee to 16g of water, and water just off the boil (around 94–96°C). Boiling water scalds the grounds and pulls out bitterness.

Brewing Lekker Brew: smooth, sweet, built for milk

Lekker Brew leans mellow and sweet; mandarin, marzipan, white chocolate. That profile holds up beautifully under milk, so it's the one we reach for when we want a flat white or a proper milky brew.

Best methods: French press or moka pot

  1. French press: Coarse grind, 1:15 ratio (roughly 20g coffee to 300ml water). Pour, stir once, steep for 4 minutes, then press slowly.
  2. Moka pot (stovetop), and this is my go-to method: Fine grind, fill the basket level, don't tamp it. Low-medium heat, lid open, and pull it off the heat the moment it starts gurgling. This gives you an espresso-strength shot to build a flat white on.

Brewing Bliksem Brew: bright, bold, built to shine on its own

Bliksem Brew has more of a punch to it; redcurrant, jelly, orange zest. Brew it in a way that lets that acidity and fruit sing, rather than burying it under milk.

Best methods: pour-over or AeroPress

  1. Pour-over (V60 or similar): Medium grind, 1:16 ratio. Bloom with double the coffee's weight in water for 30 seconds, then pour in slow circles over 2.5–3 minutes total.
  2. AeroPress: Medium-fine grind, standard method, 1–2 minute steep, gentle press for about 30 seconds. Fast, forgiving, and brilliant at showing off single-origin brightness.

Getting that "barista" finish at home

  • Grind fresh, right before brewing (game changing) pre-ground coffee loses its aroma within days, take the time to grind for each cup.
  • Weigh, don't eyeball (take your brew seriously) a cheap kitchen scale will do more for your coffee than any gadget.
  • Texture your milk properly, a handheld milk frother gets you café-style microfoam for a proper flat-white finish on Lekker Brew.
  • Use a timer, consistency is what separates a good cup from a great one.

Two coffees, endless combinations

Try both and see which method you prefer for each... some bru's like Bliksem Brew as a moka-pot shot too, just with a slightly heavier hand on the fruit-forward finish. However you brew it, that's the beauty of having two proper coffees in the cupboard instead of one.
